TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

April 15

At 2:00 pm, you will be on your way from New York straight to Santiago! After landing in the wonderful country of the Dominican Republic, you will collect your luggage from baggage claim and then travel to your hotel. Once you have had time to check-in and find your room, you will head down to your first team dinner. In the evening, you will attend an orientation meeting with a member of our in-country staff to get an overview of the week ahead.
April 16 On your first full day in the DR, start your morning off strong with a delicious breakfast at the hotel. After eating, you will travel to your first project! You will spend the day here participating in a number of activities. During the day, you may work on some light construction or meet your sponsored child for the first time. Once you have wrapped up your time at the first project, you will head back to the hotel for a nice meal and a much needed night of sleep.
April 17 After a filling breakfast, you will travel to the second project. At this location, spend time getting to know some children as you host a VBS! At around 12:00 pm, you will have a break to enjoy some lunch and relax. In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to host another VBS at a different project. Maybe your sponsored child is at this project! After these two fun-filled sessions of VBS are complete, head back to the hotel to have a meal with fellow travelers. Make sure you get to bed early, so you can prepare for the day ahead!
April 18 Today’s the day you have been waiting for! It’s time to celebrate with your sponsored child. You will get to spend the entire day playing games and sharing stories with your child. This day may hold a trip to a community park or a local museum. You will not have to worry about the language barrier as translators will be present to assist you in communication. After a packed day of excitement, you will enjoy a low-key dinner at the hotel and a restful night’s sleep.
April 19 After breakfast, you will travel to a project where you will attend a local church service. Spend a couple hours in community with the local people as you pray and worship God together. After church, enjoy a nice meal with the team and then travel to another project where you will walk around the community and visit a few homes. In the evening, experience some great DR cuisine as you eat dinner out in the city. Travel back to the hotel for some debriefing and sleep.
April 20 This day will be devoted to rest and reflection. Take some time to process the past week as you sightsee and shop for some souvenirs!
April 21 Your journey comes to a close as you board the plane in Santiago. Arrive in New York at 10:59 am and prepare for your final travel home.

Please Note: A valid passport is required for travel but is not required at the time of registration. A copy of your passport is due March 15, 2015. All passports MUST be valid for 6 months after the mission trip dates (in this case, October 21, 2015). The traveler is responsible for seeking medical advice concerning updating your immunizations. Need Help? If you have questions that are not addressed here, please feel free to email the Assistant Trip Coordinator, Christi Costello, at ccostello@onechildmatters.org.

Preparing for your trip: One Child Matters does not require any immunizations; however, it is always wise to have your tetanus shot up-to-date.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (www.cdc.gov), “You should become familiar with what steps to take and who to contact in case of a medical emergency while you are traveling.”  We recommend that you consult with your physician, local health department or the CDC website www.cdc.gov/travel/ for information required and recommended immunizations for the country where you will be traveling 6 to 8 weeks before your departure. Some vaccinations require a series of doses spaced weeks apart.

Background Check: To ensure the safety of our children and determine eligibility to travel with One Child Matters, all travelers (over the age of 18) must complete a criminal background check. To process background checks, One Child Matters uses a third party company. After completing trip registration, please send in your $50 to pay for your background check. The $50 is nonrefundable – if your background check is approved, the funds will be applied towards your overall trip cost. The results of your background check are confidential and all personal information is kept in a secure location.
