Being able to read your prayers will impact your sponsored child’s heart in immeasurable ways, and the best part is you have help in writing it. God’s heart is for this child as well, and you can ask for His help and inspiration.
We recommend praying that God will bring something to mind that will speak deeply to your sponsored child. It could be a Bible verse or something in response to a situation your sponsored child has shared with you. For examples of what other sponsors have written, visit our blog.
Yes, please include scripture references if you are using a prayer as a guide or citing it directly. (NOTE: if you sponsor a child in the Middle East, we recommend focusing your prayers on life situations, as using scripture and referencing Jesus can put our projects and staff at risk. You will soon receive a special mailing with suggestions and examples.)
If you’d like some ideas of Scriptures you can pray through for inspiration, a wonderful prayer can be found in Ephesians 3:14-21:
14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
You can paraphrase this passage into a prayer for your sponsored child:
Dear _____________, When I pray for you, I pray that God will strengthen you inside and out, and that you will come to understand just how much God loves you. His love for you is wider than you can imagine, longer than the farthest distance, higher than the sky, and deeper than the ocean. God is glad He made you, and so am I! Love, ____________

If your sponsored child has shared some of his concerns about life (such as his education) it can be this simple:
Dear _________, I am praying that you will grow in confidence in school, that you will be encouraged every day in how much you are learning and growing. God knows you are working hard, and I am praying that God will give you wisdom and strength to pursue what He made you to do.
Oftentimes the verses that bring you the most comfort will also comfort your sponsored child:
Dear ________, I am praying that you realize just how much God loves you! I pray that no matter what you face in life, even the difficult things like frustrations, disappointments, and failures, you will find God faithful. Nothing can separate you from God’s love through Christ Jesus. Even when our hearts are discouraged, God is greater than our hearts and He knows all things.
