Haiti hit by 7.0 Earthquake

1/12/10
Mission of Mercy is actively seeking word from our projects in Haiti to gauge the impact from Tuesday's earthquake centered around the capital city, Port au Prince. To learn more details about the earthquake, feel free to read more here at Yahoo News.

Mission of Mercy operates 14 projects in the country, all located in the northern half of this small Caribbean nation, approximately 80 miles from the epicenter. As of early morning, January 13, there is no known damage to any of our child development projects.

Haiti shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic where Mission of Mercy operates 30 projects. We have had brief communication with staff in the Dominican Republic. Though they experienced strong tremors, we are not aware of any impact to our children or project structures in that country.

As a safety precaution, we have temporarily suspended activities in our projects in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Communication remains difficult, but we will update information as we hear more from the project leaders. Please keep the people of Haiti in your prayers.

Mission of Mercy is responding to this disaster. Please join with us by making a donation to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Effort. Funds will go to assisting relief efforts in communities where we work and to join efforts underway in Port au Prince.
